The motto in ǀXam Khoisan script, !KE Eː ǀXARRA ǁKE (Unity in Diversity), is inscribed on a scroll beneath the shield. The date appears at the top of the field, with the legend SOUTH AFRICA arcing along the left periphery and AFRIKA-DZONGA (the Tsonga name for South Africa) arcing along the right.
