Obverse description The post-apartheid South African national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring a Secretary Bird with outstretched wings above a shield bearing two figures in greeting, flanked by crossed spears and a knobkierie, with a protea flower and wheat ears at the base. The motto in ǀXam Khoisan script, !KE Eː ǀXARRA ǁKE (Unity in Diversity), is inscribed on a scroll beneath the shield. The date appears at the top of the field, with the legend SOUTH AFRICA arcing along the left periphery and AFRIKA-DZONGA (the Tsonga name for South Africa) arcing along the right. The engraver's initials ALS appear in the lower field below the coat of arms.
