The shield displays the Boncompagni family device. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan, partially weak due to the hammered striking technique. The overall design reflects the provincial workshop standards of the Fano mint under pontifical authority. |

Gregory XIII is remembered almost exclusively for the 1582 calendar reform that bears his name, but his pontificate also demanded constant management of the Papal States' fragmented monetary system — a network of regional mints each producing small billon coins to local circulation needs. Fano's mint, operating under papal authority on the Adriatic coast, was one of several provincial operations striking low-denomination coinage largely invisible to the historical record beyond their catalog references.
At under 0.6 grams, attrition rates for quattrini were extreme. Survivors in any condition above heavily worn are genuinely scarce.
