| 表面の説明 | The field displays the Arabic denomination 'جنيه واحد' (One Pound) in large naskh script at centre, flanked on either side by the dual dates 1398 (Hijri) and 1978 (Gregorian) in Arabic-Indic and Western numerals respectively. The circular legend 'جمهورية مصر العربية' (Arab Republic of Egypt) runs along the upper periphery in naskh script. An ornate arabesqe decorative cartouche occupies the lower portion of the field. The entire design is bordered by a toothed inner rim. |

Ain Shams University was established in 1950 as Ibrahim Pasha University — one of three major state universities founded in quick succession as Egypt expanded public higher education following the postwar period. It was renamed after the ancient district of Heliopolis in 1954. The 1978 issue marks its twenty-fifth year, commissioned by the Central Bank during a period when Egypt was actively using commemorative coinage as a policy instrument following the 1971 monetary reforms.
The .720 silver fineness places this squarely in Egypt's standard commemorative alloy of the late 1970s, identical to several issues of the same period.
