Biafra's silver coinage of 1969 was struck not for circulation but for foreign exchange — an attempt by the secessionist government to raise hard currency as the civil war against Nigeria entered its final, catastrophic phase. The republic collapsed in January 1970, meaning these pieces were produced mere months before Biafra ceased to exist entirely.
Most examples were sold through European coin dealers and never reached Biafran territory at all.
