The overall composition closely emulates the design tradition of the Portuguese Portugaloser gold coinage, adapted here for civic presentation purposes. The surrounding field is occupied by the Latin legend divided by the decorative devices. The workmanship reflects the high-relief hammered technique characteristic of Dutch civic gold presentation pieces of the mid-seventeenth century. |

The cross is unadorned and symmetrical, displaying the characteristic form associated with the Order of Christ as seen on Portuguese coinage of the period. The surrounding annular field carries the Latin religious legend, punctuated by pellets, running continuously around the circumference between the beaded inner circle and the plain outer rim. The overall style is consistent with the hammered gold presentation coinage of the Dutch civic tradition in the seventeenth century. |
