Jambi's tin pitis coinage was struck locally using alluvial tin sourced from Sumatra's interior river systems, the same material that made the sultanate commercially significant to Dutch and English traders competing for influence in the region during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The coins circulated as fractional currency within a monetary system where Spanish silver dollars dominated larger transactions, leaving tin pitis to handle the smallest everyday exchanges in the market economy.
