| Obverse description | The obverse bears the eight-pointed Maltese Cross of the Order of St. John, centrally positioned in the field, a heraldic device emblematic of the Hospitallers. The surrounding Latin legend reads ☩ F PETRVS DE MONTE M H, identifying the issuing Grand Master Fra' Pietro del Monte as head of the Order. The flan is irregularly shaped and somewhat broad, characteristic of hammered copper coinage of this period. The surfaces exhibit the rough, uneven striking typical of low-denomination piccioli produced under medieval hammering technique. Overall execution is simple and utilitarian, consistent with the fractional copper coinage of the Order's Maltese mint. |
