The arms of the cross extend nearly to the inner beaded border, giving the design a strong, graphic quality typical of Livonian Order pfennigs of the early fifteenth century. The legend, reading MO-NE-TA-XO, is distributed one syllable per quadrant around the cross, referencing the coin as a new monetary issue (Moneta Nova). The irregular flan and variable strike are consistent with hand-hammered production at the Reval mint under Master Zisse von Rutenberg. |

The Livonian Order's small billon issues from Reval in the 1420s were struck under the authority of local commanders rather than the Grand Master — a decentralized minting practice that reflected the Order's semi-autonomous territorial structure along the eastern Baltic. Zisse von Rutenberg served as Komtur of Reval during this period, and coins attributable to his tenure are identified primarily through Haljak's typological work rather than explicit mint documentation.
Billon of this fineness degrades unpredictably in Baltic soil conditions, which accounts for the consistently poor surfaces on excavated examples.
