| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a detailed cartographic depiction of the Caribbean Sea region, illustrating the route of Christopher Columbus's first voyage of 1492. The islands and landmasses encountered during the voyage are labelled with both their indigenous and Spanish colonial names, including San Salvador/Gvanahani, Sta. Maria Concepcion/Rvm Cay, Jvana/Cvba, Fernandina/Long Island, Isabela/Crooked, Babeqve/Gran Inagva, Tortvga, and La Española. Two period sailing ships are engraved in the field, evoking the Santa María and her consorts, while a compass rose is prominently rendered in the lower left quadrant. The legend PRIMER VIAJE DE COLON arcs along the upper left periphery with the year 1492 below it, the date 1990 appears at left, and V CENTENARIO is inscribed along the lower rim, together commemorating the quincentenary of the voyage. |
