Villarluengo is a remote mountain village in the Maestrazgo region of Teruel, and in 1937 it was issuing its own paper currency like hundreds of other Republican-controlled communities across Aragon. The CNT-FAI collectivization of local economies during the Civil War created an acute shortage of small coin, driving town councils and collectives to print emergency local scrip — these notes were legal only within the issuing community and worthless the moment you crossed into the next valley.
The three signatures here — two Balfagóns and a Sangüesa — suggest a tightly interlocked local administration, typical of small Aragonese villages where a handful of families held most civic roles. The handstamp served as the sole security measure.
