Es Bòrds (Les Bordes in Castilian) is a tiny municipality in the Val d'Aran — the Pyrenean valley that uses Occitan as its co-official language and has always sat awkwardly within any Spanish administrative framework. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities issued their own small-denomination emergency paper due to a catastrophic shortage of coin, most of it caused by hoarding and the Republican government's inability to maintain fractional currency in circulation. This note is one of those issues.
Printed locally by Imprenta Escolar in the nearby town of Les, it is among the more geographically remote of all Catalan Civil War emissions. The Turró catalogue, the definitive reference for these municipal issues, assigns it number 481.
