Fígols de Segre is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 after Republican decree authorised local authorities to fill the chronic shortage of small change — silver and copper coinage had effectively vanished from circulation through hoarding and wartime disruption. Lafont i Miralles was one of several Barcelona lithographers kept busy during this period printing these local emissions, the quality varying considerably from town to town depending on budget and urgency.
The Turró catalogue — the definitive reference for Spanish Civil War local issues — assigns this note #1003, placing it within a documented series for the municipality. Signed by the secretary C. Puigcercós and mayor Juan Estragues.
