Aliaga is a small inland town in Teruel province, Aragon — precisely the kind of isolated municipality that found itself cut off from banking infrastructure during the early Republican zone chaos of 1936–37. Local councils across loyalist Spain issued emergency fractional paper when coin shortages became acute, as silver and copper were being hoarded or melted. The Consejo Municipal de Aliaga's 1 peseta falls squarely into this category of wartime municipal necessity.
Teruel province saw some of the most violent front-line shifts of the entire war. The Battle of Teruel in late 1937 into 1938 effectively ended any practical use for notes like this one. Surviving examples are typically unissued remainders rather than circulated pieces.
