Montenegro's 1909 coinage series, including this perper, was introduced following the formal proclamation of Prince Nikola I as sovereign ruler — a title he had held de facto for decades under Ottoman suzerainty but only consolidated in name that year. The perper itself was a new unit, replacing the prior reliance on Austro-Hungarian and Serbian currency in everyday Montenegrin commerce.
The Vienna Mint struck these coins under contract, a logistical necessity given Montenegro's complete absence of minting infrastructure.
