Beneath that, in smaller lettering arranged in three lines, reads 'CORNER OF DANNA & RAGLAN STREETS', and 'BALLARAT' appears at the bottom. The circular legend around the periphery reads 'BREAD & BISCUIT BAKER FAMILY GROCER', all rendered in Latin script. The design is entirely typographic, characteristic of Australian colonial tradesmen's tokens of the period. |

The upper peripheral legend reads 'VICTORIA 1862' and the lower peripheral legend reads 'IN VINO VERITAS', both separated by raised dot stops and enclosed within a beaded outer border. The motto 'In vino veritas' (Latin: 'In wine there is truth') and the viticultural imagery are characteristic of this die type used by the Melbourne token manufacturer Stokes & Martin. |
