Obverse description The obverse features an all-text design within a beaded border. The merchant's name 'J. TAYLOR' is prominently struck in large raised letters across the centre of the field, with 'RED HOUSE' below in bold lettering. Beneath that, in smaller lettering arranged in three lines, reads 'CORNER OF DANNA & RAGLAN STREETS', and 'BALLARAT' appears at the bottom. The circular legend around the periphery reads 'BREAD & BISCUIT BAKER FAMILY GROCER', all rendered in Latin script. The design is entirely typographic, characteristic of Australian colonial tradesmen's tokens of the period.
