| Beschrijving voorzijde | Crude bust of a crowned ruler in right profile, rendered in the Anglo-Saxon hammered tradition and closely imitating contemporary English coinage of Cnut. The effigy wears an elaborate pointed crown or helmet adorned with projecting ornaments, with drapery visible at the shoulder. The portrait is executed in a somewhat barbarous provincial style, reflecting local Norse die-cutting practice rather than an English mint. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the bust, reading + CNVT REX ANGLOR, invoking the authority of Cnut, King of England. The irregular flan and bold relief are characteristic of early eleventh-century Norwegian penning coinage. |
