| Obverse description | The winged Lion of Saint Mark, the emblematic symbol of the Ionian State, depicted passant to the right in high relief, wearing a nimbus and resting its forepaw upon a shield bearing a cross, with a bundle of arrows radiating behind. The circular Greek legend ΙΟΝΙΚΟΝ ΚΡΑΤΟΣ arcs around the upper field, and the date 1819 is inscribed at the bottom within a toothed border. The design reflects the classical Venetian heraldic tradition adapted to the British protectorate coinage of the Ionian Islands. |
