Vijayabahu IV ruled from Dambadeniya for barely three years before being deposed and killed by his own ministers, making his coinage among the shortest-lived issues of medieval Sri Lanka. The Dambadeniya kingdom itself was founded as a refuge capital after Polonnaruwa fell to South Indian invaders in the thirteenth century — the dynasty was still fighting for permanence when these coins were struck.
