Christiania has issued its own internal currency intermittently since the 1970s, used within the freetown's boundaries in Copenhagen as a deliberate rejection of Danish state economic systems. The 2015 brass issue came during a period of renewed tension with Danish authorities over property ownership — the community had only recently concluded a long legal dispute by collectively purchasing the land in 2011 after decades of squatting.
These pieces circulate, if at all, exclusively within Pusher Street vendors and the commune's internal economy.
