| Reverse description | At center, a bust of the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso is depicted in profile, reproduced after the celebrated statue in Constanța (ancient Tomis). To the right of the portrait, the year of issue 2008 appears, underlined by a decorative garland. Along the upper periphery, the legend PUBLIUS OVIDIUS NASO arcs across the field, while the lower legend reads o A.D. VIII o TOMIS o A.D. XVII o, commemorating the poet's banishment to Tomis and his death there. |

Issued to mark the 2,050th anniversary of Ovid's birth, this coin arrives freighted with a particular Romanian irony: the poet Augustus exiled to Tomis — modern Constanța, on Romania's Black Sea coast — in 8 AD, where he died never having secured his return to Rome. Romania has long claimed him as a foundational cultural figure precisely because of that exile, a punishment Ovid himself spent his final decade bitterly contesting in verse.
