Additional information

Issued to mark the 2,050th anniversary of Ovid's birth, this coin arrives freighted with a particular Romanian irony: the poet Augustus exiled to Tomis — modern Constanța, on Romania's Black Sea coast — in 8 AD, where he died never having secured his return to Rome. Romania has long claimed him as a foundational cultural figure precisely because of that exile, a punishment Ovid himself spent his final decade bitterly contesting in verse.
