The Sivagangai Nayaks operated as semi-autonomous chiefs under the broader Vijayanagara framework following the catastrophic defeat at Talikota in 1565, when the empire's political center effectively collapsed under the Deccan Sultanate coalition. Local Nayak rulers across the Tamil south continued issuing coinage in the imperial name well into the late sixteenth century — less as a statement of fealty than as a practical assertion of regional legitimacy in the power vacuum that followed.
