Haiti's 1916 issues came during the early years of the United States military occupation, which began in 1915 and would last until 1934. The Banque Nationale de la République d'Haïti had been placed under American receivership, and currency policy was effectively administered by the National City Bank of New York — an arrangement that generated considerable political friction and remains controversial in Haitian historiography.
The P#135 series was printed by the American Bank Note Company. Notes from this occupation-era period are frequently found with significant circulation wear, reflecting genuine use rather than hoarding.
