Paul III appointed his grandson Ranuccio Farnese as legate of the Macerata mint in 1546 — a piece of naked nepotism even by Renaissance papal standards. Ranuccio was nineteen years old at the time and held the position until his death in 1565, though the coinage bearing his name as legate spans only the final years of Paul III's own pontificate.
Macerata's output under Farnese family control was modest, and giulio issues from this specific legateship are considerably scarcer than their Roman counterparts.
