| Reverse description | Central field displays a bold cross pattée with slightly flaring arms, struck in high relief and contained within an inner reeded (beaded) border. The surrounding legend in uncial Latin reads CVNRADVS REX, invoking the nominal authority of Conrad, King of Germany, a feudal fiction maintained by the Republic long after the Hohenstaufen line had lapsed. The legend is introduced by a cross pattée and the letters are separated by a pellet stop. The overall design is austere and hieratic, consistent with the Genoese gold coinage tradition derived from Byzantine and Islamic monetary influences. |
