The surrounding legend in uncial Latin reads CVNRADVS REX, invoking the nominal authority of Conrad, King of Germany, a feudal fiction maintained by the Republic long after the Hohenstaufen line had lapsed. The legend is introduced by a cross pattée and the letters are separated by a pellet stop. The overall design is austere and hieratic, consistent with the Genoese gold coinage tradition derived from Byzantine and Islamic monetary influences.
