South Africa's florin series of this period was struck at the Pretoria Mint, which had opened only in 1923 — making these among the very first coins produced by a South African national mint rather than imported from the Royal Mint in London. The transition was politically charged: Afrikaner nationalist sentiment had been pushing for domestic minting since Union in 1910, and the new facility represented a hard-won administrative concession from the British-aligned government.
The 1923 date is notably scarce relative to later issues in the run, with mintage figures reflecting the mint's early production constraints. By 1930, output had stabilized considerably.
