Central device featuring the quartered coat of arms of the Union of South Africa, supported by ornate scrollwork, with the four quarters displaying the emblems of the former colonies: the anchor and ship of the Cape Colony, the lion of Natal, the Voortrekker wagon wheel of the Transvaal, and the orange tree of the Orange Free State. The four-digit date is split either side of the shield, with the first two digits to the left and the last two to the right. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA ZUID-AFRIKA arcs around the upper periphery, and the denomination FLORIN appears in the lower exergue, with small floral ornaments flanking the inscription. The whole is enclosed within a beaded border. |
