The four-digit date is split either side of the shield, with the first two digits to the left and the last two to the right. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA ZUID-AFRIKA arcs around the upper periphery, and the denomination FLORIN appears in the lower exergue, with small floral ornaments flanking the inscription. South Africa's florin series of this period was struck at the Pretoria Mint, which had opened only in 1923 — making these among the very first coins produced by a South African national mint rather than imported from the Royal Mint in London. The transition was politically charged: Afrikaner nationalist sentiment had been pushing for domestic minting since Union in 1910, and the new facility represented a hard-won administrative concession from the British-aligned government.
The 1923 date is notably scarce relative to later issues in the run, with mintage figures reflecting the mint's early production constraints. By 1930, output had stabilized considerably.
