A circular marginal legend in Kufic script occupies the outer band, separated from the central field by a beaded or linear border. The reverse follows the standard Samanid fals format with purely epigraphic design and no figural elements. The lettering is bold and deeply struck relative to the irregular copper flan. The overall style is consistent with 3rd-century AH provincial Islamic coinage. |

Ahmad II ibn Asad ruled the Samanid amirate of Transoxiana from 864 until his assassination in 874 — making a coin attributed to 890 chronologically impossible under his reign. The attribution almost certainly reflects either a misidentified ruler or a date conversion error from the Islamic lunar calendar. Samanid copper fals of this period were locally produced in quantity across Transoxiana and Khurasan, with mint attribution often the only reliable anchor for a correct identification.
