Obverse description The obverse features a faithful reproduction of the ancient Athenian tetradrachm of circa 490 BC, depicting a right-facing owl with spread tail feathers, an olive sprig and crescent moon to the upper left, all set within a beaded inner circle. The face value '1 ΕΥΡΩ' is inscribed in Greek characters to the left of the central motif, accompanied by the engraver's initials 'ΓΣ' and the year of issue. The design is encircled by the twelve stars of the European Union forming the outer ring.

Reverse description The reverse displays the second common European map design, depicting the European continent as a whole without internal national borders, rendered in relief against a cross-hatched background. The globe-like projection extends into the surrounding seas, emphasising the unity of the European Union. The denomination '1 EURO' is inscribed to the left of the map, with the engraver's initials 'LL' (Luc Luycx) below. The twelve stars of the European Union encircle the entire composition within the bimetallic ring.
