| Obverse description | Central field features the Hamburg city arms — a white castle with three towers set within an ornate cartouche with scrollwork surround. The engraver's initials I·H·L appear below the shield in the lower field. A circular legend surrounds the design, reading MONETA AVREA CIVITATIS HAMBVRGENS, referencing the gold coinage of the city of Hamburg. The overall composition is rendered in a refined Baroque style characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century German municipal coinage. |

The surrounding legend, divided by the date 1748 in the lower exergue area, reads FRANCISCVS D G ROM IMP SEMP AVGVST, citing the full imperial titulature of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor.
