Rudrasena III ruled the Western Satraps during a period of sustained pressure from the Gupta empire, which would ultimately extinguish the dynasty under Chandragupta II sometime around 395–410 AD. His coins are among the last issues of a lineage that had controlled western India for nearly four centuries, descended from Saka nomadic rulers who absorbed Hellenistic minting conventions through Bactrian intermediaries.
The drachm series of the late Satraps is notorious for progressively degrading silver content and increasingly cursive Brahmi inscriptions — a known deterioration across the type, not specific to individual specimens.
