The Rum Rebellion of January 1808 was the only successful armed overthrow of a government in Australian history — officers of the New South Wales Corps deposed Governor William Bligh, the same man who had survived the Bounty mutiny nineteen years earlier. Bligh was held under house arrest for over a year before being permitted to leave the colony. The "rum" in the rebellion's name refers less to a literal drink and more to the Corps' grip on the colony's liquor trade as a de facto currency.
The pad-printed dump format directly references the holey dollar and dump coinage Bligh's successor authorized in 1813 — the punched-out centre disc of Spanish dollars pressed into emergency colonial circulation.
