| Obverse description | The obverse presents an annular (holed) field entirely devoid of a central effigy, the large circular perforation forming the dominant design element. Surrounding the hole, an undulating serpentine or scalloped raised border frames the inner edge of the annular field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper and lateral portions of the annular field in bold serif capitals, while the date 1852 appears at the base. A beaded border runs along the outer rim, separated from the legend by a plain raised band. |
