Aversbeschreibung Central device consisting of a Burgundian firesteel (briquet) surmounted by a decorative scroll, flanked on either side by a small ring or annulet, all set within a cross-pattée framework characteristic of Habsburg Low Countries coinage. The composition is rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of late 16th-century Namur provincial issues. A beaded inner circle frames the central motif, with the Latin titular legend of Philip II disposed around the periphery, separated by a fleur-de-lis stop.

Reversbeschreibung Upright heraldic shield bearing the lion rampant of Namur, surmounted by a mural or comital crown with visible decorative elements. The shield is rendered in a bold hammered style with clearly articulated charge, and is flanked on either side by the date divided across the field. The surrounding Latin legend, reading from a fleur-de-lis stop, invokes divine assistance in a formula common to Habsburg provincial coinage of the Southern Netherlands.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Philip II's tenure over the Spanish Netherlands was defined by the Duke of Alba's brutal suppression campaigns and the resulting monetary chaos across the southern provinces. Namur, one of the loyalist counties that remained under Spanish control through much of the revolt, continued striking petty copper coinage even as the northern provinces descended into open war. The 1578–1579 dating places this piece squarely within the period of the Union of Arras, when Namur and neighboring Walloon provinces formally realigned with the Spanish Crown — a political settlement that directly authorized continued local minting rights.
