| Beschrijving voorzijde | Rhomboid klippe flan with three counterstamps applied along the long vertical axis. At center, the arms of Haarlem comprising a sword, cross, and stars. At the upper point, a crescent and star counterstamp; at the lower point, the date counterstamp reading 157Z (for 1572). The field is otherwise plain, consistent with the emergency nature of this siege coinage. |

Haarlem held out against Spanish forces under Federico de Toledo for seven months in 1572–73, one of the most grueling sieges of the Dutch Revolt. When the city's silver supply ran low, municipal authorities authorized the cutting and stamping of plate silver into irregular rhomboid shapes — weighed, then triple-stamped to certify value. These are not struck coins in any conventional sense; they are certified bullion fragments, authenticated by necessity.
The city surrendered in July 1573. Most of the garrison was executed.
