Australia's only crown-sized silver coin of the twentieth century, this piece was struck to commemorate the coronation of George VI following Edward VIII's abdication in December 1936 — one of the most politically disruptive successions in modern British history. The Melbourne Mint produced the issue across two years, with 1937-dated pieces struck in that year and a smaller quantity carrying the 1938 date.
Mintages were modest by Commonwealth standards, and the coins saw little genuine circulation, which accounts for the relative frequency of higher-grade survivors today.
