The Bahamas gained independence from Britain in 1973, making this 1970 issue part of the transitional coinage struck while the islands were still a Crown Colony. The series was introduced in 1966 to replace the Jamaican and British coins that had previously circulated — the Bahamas had no decimal coinage of its own before that year. Franklin Mint produced much of the early Bahamian coinage during this period under contract.
