The Ning mint, located in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, operated during the early Kangxi reign as part of the massive consolidation effort following the Shunzhi emperor's death in 1661. The doubled Ning mint mark — appearing on both sides of the reverse — distinguishes this issue within the early Kangxi series, a convention adopted at certain provincial mints to differentiate their output from the central Beijing boards. Production at Ningbo was curtailed well before 1670 as the court rationalized its provincial minting network, making the operational window for this type narrower than the reign dates formally suggest.
