Obverse description Cast brass cash coin with a central square perforation. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-bottom-right-left: 大 (dà), 明 (míng), 通 (tōng), 寶 (bǎo), forming the legend 'Da Ming Tong Bao' (Great Ming Universal Currency). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief within a plain, undecorated field, bounded by raised inner and outer rims.
