Additional information

Spain's 1.5 euro denomination has no circulation function — it exists purely as a collector vehicle, a format the Real Casa de la Moneda has used since the mid-2000s to issue themed pieces outside the standard euro coinage framework. The A400M was selected as subject matter with obvious national interest: the aircraft is assembled in Seville, and Spain is one of the primary partner nations in the OCCAR-managed program, having committed to 27 aircraft for the Ejército del Aire.

The program itself had a troubled development history, running roughly €11 billion over budget and years behind schedule before first deliveries began in 2013.
