Venezuela adopted the bolívar as its national currency in 1879, aligning with the Latin Monetary Union's silver standards despite never formally joining the bloc. This tiny denomination was among the first issues struck under the new system, produced at the Brussels mint — a reflection of Venezuela's limited domestic minting infrastructure at the time.

Two catalogue varieties exist for this date, distinguished by differences in the lettering of the edge inscription.
