Reverse description Central field bears a three-line Arabic inscription within an open wreath of olive branches tied at the base, reading 'ضرب / تونس / ١٢٨٩' (meaning 'Struck in Tunis / 1289'). The AH date 1289 appears prominently in the lower portion of the inscription. The wreath branches extend symmetrically from a bow at the base and terminate in berried tips at the upper register, framing the legend in a style characteristic of Tunisian Husainid-era coinage issued under joint Ottoman and Bey suzerainty.

Additional information

The Beylik of Tunis occupied an awkward political position by 1872 — nominally an Ottoman vassal, effectively under deepening French financial pressure following the ruinous indemnity imposed after the 1864 tribal revolt. Coins of this period bear both the Ottoman sultan's name and the Tunisian bey's, a dual acknowledgment of suzerainty that was becoming increasingly ceremonial as French creditors tightened their grip. Within nine years, the Bardo Treaty would end Tunisian autonomy entirely.
