John III ruled Brabant from 1312 until 1355, one of the longer and more stable reigns in the duchy's history. His monetary policy was notably active — he negotiated coinage agreements with neighboring lords to regularize exchange rates across the Low Countries, a persistent problem in a region where a dozen different coinages circulated simultaneously within a single market town.
The quarter groat denomination itself reflects the practical demands of small commerce in early fourteenth-century Brabant, where full groats were too valuable for everyday transactions.
