The composition is characteristic of the 'Madonnadaalder' type, a devotional image widely employed on ecclesiastical coinages of the Low Countries in the sixteenth century. The surrounding outer legend reads: NA ★ LVTIC ★ BETZL ★ SCROT ★ V ★ KOR, referring to the monetary tariff or valuation inscription associated with the Batzelaar denomination. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of hammered silver production at the Thorn mint. |
