Obverse description Central field depicts a rampant lion facing left, rendered in high relief with prominent mane and raised forepaw, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The heraldic lion represents the arms of the Van Brederode dynasty. The surrounding outer legend, separated from the inner field by the beaded border, reads: + MAR ★ D ★ I ★ B ★ AB ★ D ★ WER ★ FRI ★ S ★ THORE, identifying the abbess Margaret, Dynasta in Brederode, Abbess of the Secular Free Stift Thorn. The coin shows typical characteristics of hammered Low Countries silver coinage of the mid-sixteenth century, with irregular flan and uneven strike.

Reverse description Central field depicts the crowned Virgin Mary standing facing, draped in flowing robes with a radiate glory or sun-burst halo emanating behind her figure, holding the Christ Child before her. The composition is characteristic of the 'Madonnadaalder' type, a devotional image widely employed on ecclesiastical coinages of the Low Countries in the sixteenth century. The surrounding outer legend reads: NA ★ LVTIC ★ BETZL ★ SCROT ★ V ★ KOR, referring to the monetary tariff or valuation inscription associated with the Batzelaar denomination. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of hammered silver production at the Thorn mint.
