South Africa's halfpenny of this period was produced in the final years before the National Party's 1948 election victory began reshaping the country's institutions, though the mint itself operated without interruption through the political transition. George VI's health was deteriorating sharply by 1950, and production of coins bearing his effigy ceased that year ahead of his death in February 1952.
The KM#33.1 designation distinguishes this from the later 33.2 variety, the difference hinging on subtle legend modifications tied to the King's revised royal title after Indian independence in 1947 stripped "Emperor of India" from the formula.
