| Reverse description | A short-footed cross, whose arms terminate before reaching the coin's periphery, is embellished at its extremities with two crossed lily bars, giving a decorative foliate character to the design. An additional inner pearl circle frames the central cross, creating a concentric border effect within the field. The composition is characteristic of Romanesque ecclesiastical influenced die work of the mid-to-late 12th century, with the pellet border providing a secondary decorative frame typical of Low Countries obol coinage of the period. |

Floris III's comital authority over Holland was still being consolidated against both episcopal rivals in Utrecht and Flemish pressure from the south during this period. Small fractional silver like this moved through local markets and toll stations along the Rhine delta routes — the economic tissue of a county that derived much of its early wealth from controlling waterway traffic rather than agricultural surplus.
